How do I find products?

There are literally thousands, probably millions of affiliate programs, ranging from huge companies like Flight Centre and 3 Mobile, to small home business owners and everything in between. Payment from promoting these programs can vary from a few cents per click for each visitor you refer to a website, to hundreds of dollars for programs that have recurring commissions. A recurring commission is one that is paid for an ongoing service, such as a monthly membership subscription.

No matter what you choose to promote, there is sure to be an affiliate program for it somewhere. One of the easiest ways of finding products is by joining an affiliate network.

What is an affiliate network?

An affiliate network is a company that helps to match merchants – the people who are selling products – with publishers or affiliates – the people who promote the products for a commission. Many of the larger networks have thousands of merchants to choose from. Some companies choose to run in-house affiliate programs. An in house program is one that the company runs itself without using an affiliate network.

How do I choose a product or niche?

Sometimes this can be the tricky bit, but it is fun doing the research. It is usually best to choose something that you know a little bit about to get started. It would be pointless trying to promote car engine parts if you’ve never lifted the bonnet or cloth nappies if you’ve only ever used disposables.

Write a list of things that you know about or your hobbies and pastimes. You are bound to find something that you would feel comfortable about. One way of approaching this is by looking at yourself from your friends point of view. What sort of things do they ask you about? Are you an excellent dog trainer? Or do you make a killer chocolate cake?

Look at your job and life experiences. Is there something that you have a particular expertise in? Are you a bartender that makes the best cocktails ever? Perhaps you’re an accountant who has expert knowledge in a particular field? Or a seasoned traveller who knows lots of little tips and tricks for safe travel?

Once you have a list of between ten and twenty things that you have a keen interest in or are knowledgeable about it is time to do some research.
